a kiss in the rain at larchfield estate

Congratulations to Nathan Hughes, aka CameoPics, winner of our Photo of the Week #19 for this amazing composition entitled ‘A Kiss In The Rain At Larchfield Estate’, chosen by guest judge, Steven Hanna.

I particularly love the atmosphere captured here in the green house at Larchfield Estate at Richie and Debra Maher’s winter wedding. I normally shoot very bright and airy for weddings but I decided to do something different on this occasion and go for dark and edgy instead. The shot was taken at approximately 4pm on December 19, when the light was just slipping off. It was still bright outside, which is why the low ISO worked so well.

‘This photograph was taken on a Canon 5d M III, handheld. My settings were ISO 400, F2.8, 1/80shutter. I used my Canon 16-35mm 2 series at 16mm. Genesis gf400 flash, set at 1/8 and positioned about three metres behind the bride and groom to up light the rain and throw shadows. In the edit I reduced noise and increased the blacks slightly. I also sharpened the bride and groom and saturated the pink flowers to pop them a little.

‘I have to give some credit to my mentor photographer Ursula McCollam, who helped me with this concept in the days leading up to the wedding. She took a similar shot in the courtyard in Larchfield using an umbrella. This inspired me to try it in the greenhouse doorway. My second shooter, Anton, wasn’t too pleased having to squat in the pouring rain protecting the flash – he got drenched. But hey, we got a fantastic image.’
